Pranayam

Pranayam is made of two words from sanskrit language. Prana and Ayama. Prana stands for breath or the energy. Ayama stands for control. Pranayama means to control your breath.

Why we need Pranayam?

It is estimated that our lungs take in 180-200 cubic inches. When we inhale we take in 15%-20% of our lungs capacity and exhale the same amount. Rest 85%-80% of air remain in the lungs all the time. If we take a beep breath then we can exhale 50% of air.

With Pranayam we can make major part of the air present in the lungs active in the breathing cycle. If the residual air in the lungs gets purified, the food is digested properly, the body organs become strong and entire body is cleaned and purified. Whatever food we eat comes in contact with the oxygen that is inhaled in the process of respiration. The oxidation process yields several important compounds that are useful for the body. The carbon present in the food becomes carbon dioxide. It mix with nitrogen, and other elements present in the food and is thrown out when exhale. Phosphorous present in the food comes in contact with oxygen and becomes phosphate, which builds bones in our body. Sage Patanjali has specified Pranayam is useful mainly for spiritual purpose. Other texts and classics describe Pranayam that can strengthen the body and cure diseases. Millions and millions of people have already benefited from Pranayam in recent years.

People got mental, intellectual, personal, spiritual and general benefits along with physical benefits.

Pranayama

  1. Standing straight heels and toes together. Palms on our ribcage and close your eyes. Take your shoulder back and relax. Neck is straight and chest is out. Keep breathing normal, feel your ribcage expanding with inhalation and contraction with exhalation. Become aware of our heart. Feeling our respiratory system. Inhaling slowly from our nose, deep long breath, expanding ribcage, exhaling completely through the mouth contracting rib cage.
  2. Standing straight heels and toes together, arms straight and palms besides the thighs, inhaling raising our arms from side, both our arm are straight and space between our palms shoulder width looking at our fingers. Exhaling very slowly and bringing palms right besides your thighs and looking straight making our inhalation and exhalation longer and slower. Increasing the flow or oxygen in our body without increasing its consumption, storing energy in our body called “Prana”. With each inhalation increasing the energy pran in our body. With each exhalation getting rid of all the toxins, negativity and stress

In our psychology we believe while practicing pranayama we are filling ourselves with energy.

The Breathing process is divided in three parts

  1. Breathe in - This is known as Poorak in Sanskrit language. This mean to fill the air in to your respiratory system. To fill the lungs and inflate the ribcage.
  2. Control breath - This is known as Kunbhak in Sanskrit language. This means to control the breath or hold/pause the breath between breathing in and breathing out process. In Kumbhak there no inhalation and no exhalation.
  3. Breathe out -This is known as Rechak in Sanskrit language. This means to empty the lungs.

Kumbhak or Control of breath happens twice during the breathing process. First when a person breathes in then when a person breathes out.

Kumbhak means a Container. Like a container can have two conditions.

  1. Either completely full or
  2. Completely empty

Same way lungs can have tow conditions while practicing Pranayama either completely full or completely empty.

Kumbhak are of two types

  1. Internal Kumbhak
  2. External Kumbhak

Internal Kumbhak is also known as Antar Kumbhak. Holding of breath after breathing in is Internal Kumbhak. Antar mean inside in Sanskrit language.

External Kumbhak is also known as Bahya Kumbhak. Holding of breath after breathing out is external Kumbhak. Bahya mean external in Sanskrit language.

Breath control should be practiced very slowly since it is practiced to control Prana. As wild animals are controlled slowly, the same way Prana or Vital energy can be controlled slowly.

How to practice Pranayam

Pranayam must be practiced with great care, under the guidance of trained Yoga Guru only. This website is to provide brief description about Pranayam. It should not be used for training purposes. It should always be practiced under the state of mental and physical relaxation. While practicing Pranayam, there should never be

  • Abrupt movements,
  • Violent inhalation
  • Violent exhalation
  • Feeling of suffocation
  • Headache
  • Other feeling discomfort

It must be practiced very slowly and gradually. No two people are alike and no two people have same degree of fitness. By fitness I mean level of fitness according to voluntary muscles as well as involuntary muscles. Voluntary muscles are the muscles those are visible, like biceps, triceps, chest muscles, thigh muscles, calves, abs and so on. Involuntary muscles are the muscles inside our body and are not visible, like organs inside our body. Once mastered upon, Pranayam must be practiced gently according to one's own capacity and physical limitation.

Body parts

These are the fallowing body parts involved while practicing Pranayam.

  • Nasal cavities,
  • Membranes,
  • Throat,
  • Lungs,
  • Heart,
  • Nerves and
  • Diaphragm
  • Others

One should never rush  over Pranayam, risk with his own health.

How can we combat Toxin?

How can we combat this general build up of toxins, paralyzing the muscles and nerves? How can we eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood?

Each Pranayam exercise shows what to do. First of all, to clear the body completely, then to recharge it with healing oxygen that stimulates the circulation.

Where to practice Pranayam

The ideal would of course be to get some fresh air away from big towns and cities. In this fast paced life no one have time to drive for couple of hours for fresh air. It is recommended to carry out breathing exercises in a well aired room. Windows can be kept open for couple of minutes so that there is plenty of fresh air inside the room. These are deep breathing exercises, therefore you want to inhale the best quality air. Morning Sun rays are full of energy and the air high in oxygen is best quality for us.  In winter window can be kept little open and warm clothes should be worn.

Posture for Pranayam

The best posture to practice Pranayam is "Lotus Position"(Padmasana). If it is difficult to adopt Lotus position then Pranayam can be practiced in "Cross Legged position" (Sukhasana). Those people who are unable to adopt either Lotus Position or Cross legged position then they can practice while sitting in the chair. The key is to keep back, neck and head in a straight line from the base of the spinal column upwards, without feeling at all tired. There are some Pranayam that can be executed while standing or lying on the back.

Flow or Rhythm

The best way to practice Pranayam is to breath regularly and according to set rhythm. Yogis measure time by counting their heartbeat. Some people take help of watch.

To breath is to live. Life is entirely dependent on the breath. All living things including plants must have air to live. Breath is ever present from the moment a baby fills its lungs to the last gasp of a dying man. "Life is nothing but a series of breaths" says a Hindu Proverb.

Importance of Pranayam

While we may live without eating for several days, and without drinking for many hours. How many minutes can we last without breathing? Man must not only breathe to live but should do so in such a way that he maintains constant vitality and avoids illness. Unfortunately, the number of people who know who to breathe properly is very small. Most people breath in a very haphazard way as may be seen by cramped chests, stooping shoulders and the development of respiratory illnesses. It has been noted that unsatisfactory breathing habits decreases resilience and shorten life.
